Biography:
Born in Auckland New Zealand and moving to Australia at age 12, Karmichael Hunt was a rugby union player who played a variety of sports during his teens. After being scouted by the Brisbane Broncos, Karmichael decided to pursue a professional career in rugby league.
Karmichael made his NRL debut in exceptional fashion. Named in the starting line-up for the Brisbane Broncos round one clash in 2004 at 17 years and 118 days of age, he became the youngest player ever to wear the maroon and gold for the club. Karmichael played in all 26 NRL round games in his rookie season and was one of the key players who steered the Broncos to the finals. He finished the season as Brisbane’s leading try scorer and was named the NRL’s Dally M Winner for Rookie of the Year.
In 2006 Karmichael kicked off his representative career. On the back of gaining selection as Fullback for the Australian ANZAC Test team, Karmichael was also selected as Fullback for the Queensland Origin team, a position which he successfully retained for the seasons which followed.
Due to come off contract with the Broncos at the end of 2009, Karmichael announced that he would be leaving rugby league to embark on a new challenge: playing professional AFL.
Karmichael will become the first professional athlete to make the switch from rugby league to AFL after agreeing to terms with the new AFL franchise the Gold Coast FC for the 2010 – 2012 seasons.
In October 2009 Karmichael agreed to terms with Biarritz Olympique Pays Basques (BOPB) to play rugby union in the Elite French Competition for the remainder of the 2009/2010 season. Karmichael was a valuable addition to the BOPB outfit and helped them to the Heineken Cup Final in May of 2010. Despite going down to Toulouse 21-19 in the Final at Stade de France in Paris, Karmichael put in a stellar performance and scored the only try of the match.
At the end of May, Karmichael returned to Australia to link up with the Gold Coast FC in the VFL.
Karmichael Hunt has become the first ever athlete to play rugby league, rugby union and AFL at an elite level, proving that he exceptional all rounder who will push himself to the limit and isn’t afraid to conquer his dreams.
